Stuffa Rift: Travel Light, Travel Smart

There is a small, almost imperceptible thrill in discovering a gadget that quietly reshapes the way we travel. For seasoned flyers, Stuffa Rift is exactly that. At first glance, it is an ordinary vest, a light jacket you might wear strolling through the city. But inside lies a clever rebellion: twelve hidden pockets, designed to carry more clothing than the airline expects, without a hint of defiance.

Frequent flyers love it. But airlines don't.

Anyone who has flown Ryanair or EasyJet knows the dance. One free personal item, and suddenly every extra kilogram becomes a sharp charge, usually around ten dollars per kilogram. That moment at check-in, when the scale reads “one kilo over,” can feel both familiar and humiliating. Two or three kilos… and minutes before boarding, our low-cost ticket suddenly costs more than the standard fare. Normally with Ryanair and Easyjet we are allowed a small personal item free, but anything above this- costs.

Stuffa, a small British company, proposes a simple, elegant solution: shift the weight from trolley to body. The Rift is compact, far less cumbersome than the traditional long travel jackets, called “wearable luggage”. Yet the Stuffa Rift is capable of carrying roughly five kilograms. Two pairs of jeans, two buttoned shirts, four T-shirts, four pairs of underwear, four pairs of socks. Enough for a full week. Add a small personal bag, and even a two-week journey becomes manageable without checking a suitcase.

The vest is designed with care. Big pockets accommodate folded trousers and shirts, medium pockets hold underwear, and smaller ones are crafted for socks. Velcro keeps everything secure, and the soft fleece lining at the collar hints at comfort. The cut is generous, allowing a traveller to fill it fully without looking absurd. In effect, what does not fit in your trolley moves onto your body.

But the Rift offers more than practicality. There is also the subtle luxury of time saved. The weary traveller, freshly off the plane, no longer waits by the carousel, scanning fifty near-identical black suitcases for the familiar yellow strap. With Stuffa Rift, the clothes are already with us. A short walk from the aircraft to passport control, and we are out. No lingering, no quiet anxiety about the fate of our luggage.

There is also a quiet emotional comfort. A small insurance policy for your peace of mind. If the suitcase is lost, our essentials -shirt, socks, perhaps even a sweater- are already on our bodies. At the fragile beginning of a journey, such small differences can shape the mood entirely. It resembles the long “wearable luggage” travel jackets that have become popular in Israel, but the Rift model is shorter and far less cumbersome. Travel jackets have many well-known advantages, but also one clear weakness: bulk. They are long, heavy and not especially comfortable in warm destinations, particularly in Israel. Stuffa Rift almost entirely removes that problem.

Using the vest is simple. At security, it slides into the tray like any carry-on. At the gate, wear it or hold it. Onboard, tuck it under the seat or into the overhead bin. Comfort is the only minor drawback: fully loaded, it can feel warm and slightly restrictive, but only briefly. Most of the time, it functions like an ordinary vest, perfect for city walks, casual strolls, or the commute to the train.

The only real drawback is comfort. Sitting in a terminal or on an aircraft with a fully loaded vest is not especially pleasant. But that discomfort lasts only a few minutes. Once we're on board, we remove it and store it under the seat or above head.

I am currently waiting for Stuffa to send me a trial vest to test, and after my next flight, I will write a new article to share with you whether combining a small under-seat bag with a Stuffa vest really does allow us to carry enough clothing for a full week without spending an extra euro.

Ms. Dominic Vanderstay of Stuffa says that Stuffa offers two main models, starting at around $130, plus roughly £35 for shipping to Israel, with delivery in about ten days.

Expensive compared with a standard vest? Perhaps. Yet a single overweight charge on a budget flight can quickly cover a significant portion of the cost, sometimes even the full return journey.

What makes Stuffa Rift truly elegant is its philosophy. It is not merely a travel gimmick, but a piece of clothing born of the realities of budget travel, of light movement, of small freedoms hidden in the fine print. It reminds us that travel, at its best, is about ingenuity, comfort, and a little bit of quiet rebellion.
