With Sri Lanka emerging as the next hot destination for Israeli travelers, convenience and comfort in lodging become paramount considerations. Facilitated by Arkia Airlines' recent inauguration of a direct 6-hour route to Sri Lanka, connectivity has never been more streamlined. This development, coupled with the anticipated reopening of Omani airspace to Israeli aircraft, promises hassle-free access to this captivating island nation. Arkia's direct flight not only caters to individual adventurers but also presents a convenient option for organized group excursions.
Tour operators don't prefer destinations with connection flights and the need to change planes at foreign airports, as some travelers may get lost in the terminal and miss their connecting flight.
Navigating the labyrinth of lodging options in Sri Lanka can be overwhelming. For the intrepid and budget-conscious traveler, guesthouses offer a wallet-friendly solution. While these accommodations typically lack air conditioning and provide shared sleeping quarters, they provide an authentic and immersive experience for those eager to mingle with fellow globetrotters.
Alternatively, opting for a room in a private residence presents a more personalized touch. Distinguished by red signs emblazoned with "ROOMS," these offerings provide a balance between affordability and comfort, with prices ranging from 1000 to 3000 rupees (12-35 NIS) per night. However, breakfast is often not included in this arrangement.
For those seeking the quintessential hotel experience, Sri Lanka boasts an array of reputable establishments, ranging from boutique lodgings to internationally recognized chains. Clean, well-appointed rooms, private bathrooms, and a plethora of amenities ensure a comfortable stay for discerning guests.
A prominent Sri Lankan tourism company, Andrew, alleviates the logistical burdens associated with accommodation arrangements. Specializing in ground services and crafting bespoke itineraries, Andrew caters primarily to tour operators worldwide. However, recognizing the burgeoning demand from independent travelers (F.I.T), Mr. Mahen Kariyawasan, the company's esteemed proprietor and Arkia Airlines' Sri Lankan representative (GSA), extends his services to private travelers. Collaborating with a multitude of esteemed hotels, Andrew ensures a seamless and memorable stay for every traveler. Its services including buses for groups and a private driver guide for FIT.
Below, I present a curated selection of 4-star accommodations, meticulously inspected and personally recommended. Each establishment promises a delightful and enriching stay, tailored to meet the diverse preferences of today's travelers. Rest assured, only the finest lodgings are featured in this review, with any subpar establishments omitted from consideration.
Hotels in the Mountainous Regions
Sigiriya – ALIYA Resort
Nestled amidst the serene beauty of Sigiriya, the ALIYA Resort presents a picturesque retreat reminiscent of the tranquil kibbutz landscapes in Israel. Its sprawling grounds, adorned with lush lawns and meandering pathways, lead to charming residential structures. The open-air lobby and reception offer a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding jungle, with the iconic silhouette of Sigiriya Rock gracing the distant horizon. A gentle breeze rustles through the foliage, enhancing the soothing ambiance of the hotel.
Notably, the lobby showcases exquisite elephant sculptures, including one with a Kippa, a delightful touch that reflects the fusion of cultures found in this enchanting setting.
Accommodation at ALIYA Resort comprises 90 thoughtfully designed rooms, including family suites with ample space for 4-5 guests. Additionally, the hotel offers double rooms featuring connecting doors, as well as wheelchair-accessible options. Guests can choose from a variety of lodging styles, including charming villas constructed from clay with roofs crafted from coconut leaves, or spacious wooden cottages exuding a warm, inviting ambiance. Stepping into these accommodations, one is greeted by the distinct aroma of wood, adding to the overall sensory experience.
For those seeking a holistic retreat, the resort provides a dedicated area for vegetarians partaking in nature-based treatments. This serene enclave, resembling a traditional Sri Lankan village, features spacious rooms with clay walls and an ambiance of tranquility. Here, guests can indulge in herbal drinks and enjoy freshly harvested vegetables grown onsite by the hotel's staff. As an added unique touch, guests are invited to participate in gardening activities and prepare their meals using the bounty from the garden.
ALIYA Resort is part of THEMA Collection hotels chain, which has 12 more branches across Sri Lanka. It is a special interesting to us because of its connection to kosher standards. The owner, Chandra Wickramasinghe, lived in France for several years, where he also acquired religious Jewish friends. French travel agents send kosher-observant clients to him, and he is more familiar with kosher and Sabbath requirements than any other hotelier I have encountered in Sri Lanka.
This expertise is reflected in the hotel's amenities, such as mechanical keys to accommodate Sabbath observance and provisions for kosher dining. Guests can request new utensils and cutlery directly from sealed packaging, ensuring adherence to dietary laws. Moreover, the hotel welcomes religious groups to bring their kosher chefs to prepare meals in its kitchens, further enhancing the dining experience for observant guests.
Mr. Chandra graciously directed me to his esteemed head chef, Ivon Kodeppolarach, whose expertise in kashrut surpasses that of many Israelis. With a rich culinary background cultivated during his tenure in hotels across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Chef Ivon brings a wealth of knowledge in Halal cuisine and Middle Eastern flavors. His commitment to excellence extends to staying abreast of kosher requirements through diligent study of professional magazines.
Chef Ivon elaborated on the meticulous measures taken in the hotel's kitchens, utilizing pyrolytic ovens, the team conducts nightly purifications at 280 degrees Celsius, in accordance with rulings by Poskim rabbis, effectively rendering the ovens kosher like LIBUN. Furthermore, rigorous sanitization procedures are employed to eliminate bacteria and enzymes. The dishwasher, operating at 85 degrees Celsius, completes the process, providing HAGHALA kashering for all utensils.
In addition to these measures, the hotel employs a system of specialized dishware, designated for various types of food, including vegetarian options. Each set is distinguished by an exclusive color, guaranteeing separation between kosher and non-kosher items, ensuring peace of mind for every diner.
I asked about kosher meat, and he replied: "We operate according to the strictest regulations of ISO-2000 and A.A.C.C.P. of the Sri Lankan Health Ministry. This means that I am allowed to buy meat, poultry, and fish only from suppliers approved by the Health Ministry. I buy beef from Maxis and poultry from Biraha. If they'll start importing kosher meat, I have no problem ordering it for the needs of religious groups, and cooking for them kosher dishes according to what they request."
Kandy – Suisse Hotel
Moving to Kandy, the Suisse Hotel exudes colonial charm in an idyllic lakeside setting, overlooking the revered Tooth Relic Temple. Housed within a former British governor's palace, the hotel offers 90 spacious rooms and 4 suites, each meticulously appointed with furnishings reflecting the colonial era. Fine cotton sheets and plush mattresses ensure a comfortable stay, while preserved doors and windows harken back to the hotel's illustrious past.
Stepping into the dining hall, guests are transported to a bygone era, with balconies reminiscent of a once-vibrant dance floor.
Adorned with historical photographs, the corridors narrate the captivating history of Kandy and Sri Lanka. A memorable encounter with a diligent porter, who cautioned against leaving balcony doors open due to mischievous monkeys, added a touch of adventure to the stay, though the picturesque garden and tranquil Kandy Lake remained undisturbed by our simian neighbors.
Habarana – Sungreen Hotel
Situated along the bustling main road from Colombo to Trincomalee, Habarana stands as a vibrant gateway to star tours encompassing Sigiriya, Dambulla, and other historical marvels nestled within the illustrious 'Cultural Triangle'. Renowned for its elephant rides and nature safaris, the town also offers the exhilarating opportunity to embark on a hot air balloon flight over its verdant forests, weather permitting.
The Sungreen Hotel boasts 40 exceptionally spacious deluxe rooms and a singular suite, each exuding a serene ambiance conducive to relaxation. From the vantage point of my second-floor balcony, I gaze upon a picturesque scene unfolding before me, a 30-meter-wide expanse of lush grass adorned with tropical trees, embraced by an iron fence, with a vast rice field stretching beyond. The tranquility is accentuated by the gentle murmur of water trickling down from the roof, accompanied by the melodious chirping of birds flitting amongst the branches. Amidst this idyllic setting, small squirrels scamper playfully, while the occasional cry of a hidden peacock punctuates the serene atmosphere. The ambiance is one of quiet serenity, a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Surrounding the expansive swimming pool area, the residential buildings provide a tranquil retreat, with the hotel's restaurant nestled at its edge. For the health-conscious traveler, a state-of-the-art fitness room awaits, promising a rejuvenating workout amidst the verdant surroundings.
Nuwara Eliya – Araliya Green Hills Hotel
Perched at an altitude of 1,868 meters above sea level, Nuwara Eliya exudes a perpetual aura of cool tranquility, earning it the affectionate moniker of "Little England".
Upon arrival at the hotel, I was surprised to see an Israeli flag proudly displayed at the entrance, alongside the flags of Sri Lanka and the United States. I asked the receptionists if an Israeli group or VIP guest was staying at the hotel, and the answer I received was, "Yes, there is now. You. We hung the Israeli flag in your honor." A pleasant gesture.
Stepping into the hotel's entrance courtyard and lobby, I was captivated by the intricate wooden sculptures of elephants adorning the space. A traditional welcome ceremony awaited, with fragrant flower garlands placed around our necks and candles ceremoniously lit, ushering us into a world of warmth and hospitality.
The hotel's offerings are as extensive as they are luxurious, with 160 meticulously appointed rooms catering to every need and preference. From king deluxe rooms to queen deluxe rooms and deluxe accommodations for three, each abode exudes spacious comfort, complemented by modern amenities and meticulous attention to detail.
The hotel's culinary delights are equally impressive, with three restaurants and two bars offering a delectable array of flavors to tantalize the palate.
For the adventurous spirit, the hotel provides a plethora of activities, including mountain biking, horse riding, cycling, and car rental services. Nearby attractions such as the enchanting Devon and St. Clair waterfalls beckon, while the surrounding tea plantations and the majestic Piduruthalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka, offer breathtaking vistas that capture the essence of Nuwara Eliya's natural splendor.
Nuwara Eliya – ARALIYA Green City Hotel

UDAWALAWA – Nil Diya Mankada Hotel
Embark on an unforgettable lodge safari experience amidst the captivating wilderness of Udawalawa at the Nil Diya Mankada Hotel. Nestled near the lush jungles of the Udawalawe National Park, this charming retreat comprises chalets and two-story buildings crafted with rustic charm and distinctive character. Constructed from rectangular red bricks, the chalets boast open verandas supported by columns of raw wood trunks, offering a picturesque setting to unwind and embrace the serene ambiance.
Ideal for families and groups, the hotel features children's activity areas equipped with ropes, ladders, and playground equipment, ensuring endless entertainment for young explorers. Immerse yourself in nature's embrace as you stroll through the expansive green lawn, shaded by towering coconut trees echoing with the melodious chirping of birds. Spot monkeys leisurely traversing the landscape, adding to the tranquil atmosphere that envelops the entire compound.
The hotel area borders a deep stream that is part of the local nature reserve. There is a row of cabins with their verandas starting from a descent of about 25 meters to the stream. Along its bend, there are rocks, and the flowing water creates a constant, pleasant, and quiet murmur, like background music. My wife settled on the veranda of our cabin, looked at the bordering lawn with our room and a row of trees in the background, and exclaimed, "It's like paradise."
At the end of the compound, there is a large swimming pool with a spa and jacuzzi. Hammocks are hung next to the pool on the branches of the trees. My wife lounged on a hammock to read a book, and I on another hammock reopened the DAF YOMI. It's a kind of utopian vacation.
Located just minutes away from two of Sri Lanka's most iconic attractions, the Elephant Orphanage and the vast national park, the Nil Diya Mankada Hotel offers unrivaled access to unforgettable safari tours, allowing guests to witness elephants, buffalo, and myriad forest animals in their natural habitat.
While the hotel promises a blissful escape, guests should be aware of minor inconveniences such as flies in the dining room during breakfast and occasional short circuits that may require attention. However, these minor drawbacks are overshadowed by the hotel's enchanting surroundings and unparalleled hospitality, ensuring a truly memorable stay amidst the splendor of Udawalawa.

A luxurious 5-star hotel nestled near Colombo's bustling commercial hub. Positioned right on the beach, its rooms boast breathtaking ocean views. Each room features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, providing an unobstructed panorama of the horizon, reminiscent of the iconic beachfront hotels in Tel Aviv.

I highly recommend ascending to the rooftop at dusk to witness the spectacular sunset. While Colombo is known for its vibrant but noisy atmosphere, this hotel is an oasis of tranquility, making it an ideal choice for the beginning or end of your Sri Lankan trip.
Colombo – Cinnamon Red Hotel
Its prime location directly across from Chabad House makes it an invaluable asset for us, with a mere stone's throw separating the hotel from this important Jewish hub. This proximity allows for seamless transitions between our accommodations and Chabad House for kosher dining, Sabbath services, Torah study, and engaging with fellow Israelis. The hotel boasts a rich Jewish heritage, occupying the site of the former Great Synagogue of Colombo, a poignant reminder of the Jewish community's history in the area. Vibrant wall paintings adorn the rooms and corridors, exuding an ambiance of joy and warmth.

The hotel's new wing boasts a spacious swimming pool and state-of-the-art recreational facilities, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. Conveniently located just a 15-minute drive from Colombo's international airport, closer to Negombo than Colombo itself, many Israelis opt to begin or end their Sri Lankan journey here, avoiding the hustle and bustle of the capital city.
Weligama – Ayurvie Hotel
Nestled within the vibrant beach town of Weligama, Ayurvie Hotel offers a serene retreat for travelers seeking respite amidst the coastal beauty. Weligama – Paranji Villa
A small boutique hotel also belonging to the Thema network. A two-story villa by the beach with 6 guest rooms, two of which overlook the ocean. Additionally, there are 4 garden rooms along the entrance path from the street and parking lot. The place operates on a Western concept with food as is customary in luxurious hotels. This place seems very suitable for a large family or a small group.
Pasikudah – The Calm Resort & Spa
The hotel boasts 70 elegant rooms on various levels. Each room offers a view of the nearby ocean. Some units feature a seating area for your convenience, and some offer a view of the pool or garden.
I got a very large room with two levels, with a seating area on the lower level. The living quarters surround a large heated pool set within a giant lawn, with coconut trees at the edge near the sea. A quiet place very suitable for families with children.
The hotel is adjacent to a private beach that also offers water sports facilities. Surfing equipment, bicycles, and cars can be rented. You can play table tennis and archery on the resort grounds. The sea here is very calm, and you can walk in it for a relatively long distance until the water reaches your shoulders.
Whether you are an independent traveler or a tourism wholesaler, I highly recommend booking hotels through the largest local tourism company, ANDREW, the oldest in Sri Lanka. The company is named after its founder, the father of the current owner, Mr. Mahen. The scope of the company's wholesale bookings allows it to obtain rooms at lower prices than us, and than booking sites like BOOKING.Com. Furthermore, if there are problems at the hotel, the company will assist us, unlike Booking where we have no one to talk to. It is advisable to contact them by email at info@andrewatrav.com or by phone at +94114513466.
